Research and development activities: ready for new challenges

In a rapidly expanding market, the challenge is to bring new medicines to patients and invest in innovation. All this is linked to the issue of patents.

Pharmaceutical research as a driving force in Italy

In Italy, the pharmaceutical industry is one of the main driving sectors of the economy, a statement made by Farmindustria president Massimo Scaccabarozzi.

Pharmaceutical companies in Italy produce 32 billion euros, 80% of which is for export, making it the leading pharmaceutical producer in Europe.

In the research and development sector, the contribution made by the pharmaceutical companies is decisive. Clinical studies for over 700 million Euros were carried out in 2017, in collaboration with universities and public research institutes. 1.5 billion euros were invested in research and development.

The challenge we are preparing for is to become a leader in the discovery of new drugs and the development of new therapies. To do this, it is necessary to open a dialogue with the institutions so that we can identify, all together, how to improve the timing and conditions of access to the most innovative therapies. At the same time, the development of technology and research and development that can keep pace and guide innovation in this growing sector, with a new and concrete approach, such as that of BiCT.

The outlook is very promising and foresees further, wide margins of opportunity.
